Our Story

Precise plant-level health and performance assessments increase
crop management efficiencies.

Cofounders George and Tim started working together while Tim pursued his Masters in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University where George was faculty in the Robotics Institute. In fact, their first meeting followed a lecture by George on the future of robotics to address agricultural challenges. “George was not more than five minutes into his presentation and I was completely hooked,” recounted Tim. Together, George and Tim recognized the immense impact technology can have on farming higher quality and consistent quantities of specialty crops with fewer resources.

From that moment forward, and built on years of research in artificial intelligence and robotics at CMU, George and Tim proceeded to design and build perception technology in various agriculture settings and seeded Bloomfield’s mission to improve the health and performance of specialty crops around the world through continuous and automated plant-level visual assessments.

During their work together, “We learned a lot about; what did, and would work; and what didn’t, and couldn’t work;” recalled George. CEO Mark DeSantis joined the team early on as a ’near founder’ and described his first meeting with Tim and George: “They explained to me that all of the farm tech out there was measuring inputs to crop management and Bloomfield was entirely focused on assessing the outcome of all those inputs–the plant. I was in.” he remembered.

Bloomfield leverages years of research and development in artificial intelligence and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University to improve the health and performance of specialty crops through automated, continuous and comprehensive plant-by-plant assessment and analysis.
